In burial ceremonies of great figures, human sacrifices are buried with the deceased person, so that they will serve that person in the afterlife. These sacrifices are called martyrs. Sometimes, martyrs also include human-size clay figures. A clay figure was possessed by the spirit of a human martyr soldier, usually because the never stopping will of serving and combat, and the resulting abomination is this demon. A clay figure that is faded to not cross to afterlife, but fight restless forever.

Probably not for undeads though.
I think they could fit better for japanese-based humans.

Terracotta is how we say "clay" in Italy
Btw the idea of using them as humans isn't bad but at the moment we have already a lot if stuff there.
About undeads I'd focus more on flesh and bone artifact creature like skeleton monsters

Well, i believe we should use more spirits/supernatural creatures on the undeads... There are very few imo...
I don't think they would fit on the humans, they are basically ancient phantoms but in clay... So they have more similarity to undeads than any other faction... But the difference is that i think they are physically weaker (smaller health and armor), but are more mobile and can regenerate. Also, they can reflect not only humanoid figures but animals, creatures and deities...
Also, i think the humanoid ones should use ancient weapons aswell (old swords, spears, slings, blowdarts, boomerangs and such...)

I can't see clay statues being faster than animated skeletons

Re: Clay-Terracotta army.
Well clay is more malleable than bones and steel if not dry without counting the sorcery involved on animating the respective bodies... The spirits could melt and dry the whole body or just the articulations... or create or attract mud projection of itself outside the figure as a fake body hiding the figure somewhere inside (i personally like this one)...
But my comparation was with phantoms, and in-game they already aren't faster than skeletons... If you think they can't be faster than Skeletons, there is already a mid-term.
