Yes, thats even for me.
I never know what to do.
Do the mercenaries turn the side after few turns?

No they don't, save the villager. Tho for me it is a special case, after i save them they Rekt the mercenaries (green) and i ended up only focusing on the blue guys (i forgot their name?), i win 3 star there.

For me,I use use one knight+all swordman+all archer to (move up)kill green units and structures.Use hero knight+all knight+assassins to assault crossbowmens.Destroy watch tower first so assassins can move to destroy fortress.For knight team,just kill all crossbowmen,ignore towers,get town as fast as possible.

No .All your unit can move at start.You are red colour.
