Hi I'm new to the forum i have a question and suggestion

If you have any new upgrade idea, than put it here.
It can be one of these: unit, structure, technology, effect.
Best if you can give: unit/structure icon, and unit/structure properties
And a description how you imagined the new upgrade.

Hi I'm new to the forum i have a question and suggestion

Post by Belosteel »

So i have been playing this game for a year now on and off and been trying to get friend's and people on forums to play the game.
Problem is they dont like how it looks so they aren't interested in playing it, they say that it lacks animation and map textures and that makes it stale.
So my first suggestion will be maybe let's all start making everything more lively?
I would like to help with that, i dont have any experience in making 8bit characters, so my question is what program are you all using to make 8bit characters and to animate them. I'm talented with drawing so making them have a similar style or even look good would be no problem.
I have more suggestions for game mechanics and such but i would like to come prepared since it depends on the game program itself.

Ps. Hello everyone i would be glad to take part in this forum and game since i really enjoy strategy games. And after looking a bit in the forum's you guys seem nice.

Welcome to the forum, new blood. To draw on PC i recommend "GIMP 2" and to draw on mobile i recommend "Pixly". Here's a tip: If you have both question and suggestion, make separate topics for each, and in right section to avoid getting them littered. As for the animations, i think there was such topic in the past. You can use the search bar on top right.
I am, indeed, a big Witch King and Middle Earth fan if you didn't notice.

Hi,
Welcome @Belosteel
Fresh energy is always good.

So i personally used alot of programms and started doing them on a tiny samsung Y mobile phone and now landed on doing the grafics
on a high-end pc working with photoshop or Paint.net (mainly paint.net caus im more used to it and its free)

Most of the current images dont got much thought put into the desgin process. it was more or less a 'make something that looks
atleast similar to what someone imagines by reading the unit name" kind of thing and we sometimes did them from scratch,
sometimes from rescaled drawing or images from the internet and many based on existing units that are mainly based on free
to use online open source pixel art tilesets.

From my experience its best to take a already good looking angle, posture character thats IN the game and change his weaponry and armor based on what you wanna draw in the end. things i do from scratch or based on other images often dont look too similar to the rest of the tiles used in this game
so i kinda rarely do it.

Now for you, if your already skilled in basics of drawing like proportions, color themes hue combinations shading and so on i only can tell you the basic rules for image making wich are alos included in this: viewtopic.php?f=216&t=592&p=88562&hilit ... b3c#p88562
topic.

Basically (for AOS) we try to keep foor units in 32*32 pixels and can only extend the y coordinate if needed. we do that to have lances buidlings or other stuff slightly exceed the average tilesize by usally up to 48 pixels in height.

I personally recorded my own process and uploaded it somewhere but the site got taken down long ago so i could (if you want that)
upload something new to youtube soon.

That aside we got a few topics that talk about polishing old units. My suggestion for you is that u (if you work on pc) get a programm that can
eazely handle transparency and color management and that lets you easely manage layers and has good cutting / selecting tools.
drawing programs are also capable an some are specialised for pixelstuff. Just find something you enjoy. i personally use my tablet recently to shade
areas so that also helps.

So pls check this: viewtopic.php?f=153&t=7290&sid=2c87442a ... c3c6082b21
topic and try to make some of those spanish unit 'better' and we see what your capable off and where i have to help you to improve.

I have a laptop but I'm in the middle of moving countries and I'm giving mine away to my fiancé so for the meantime im sticking to pixly, im already busy on the Spanish Halberdier I'll do my best to fisnish him probably tomorrow having a farewell barbecue today.
So yes it would be very useful if you made a tutorial with tips and tricks about how to make characters or maps etc in this game.
Maybe with a page on this site for beginners with all the specifications and rules about helping this forum with it's art.
