spartan warrior

Post by TheBluePhoenix »

As they were heavily clad with armour i suggest make their speed 2/1and turn cost 7/6. Also it should be more effective against elephants i think

Actually, they were not very heavily clad in armor. This is a misconception due to hollywood. They really only had mediumish armor. Sometimes even hardly any.

But when you open its info/stat box then it clearly says that they had many weapons and heavy armour

DoomCarrot had the point, Spartans were not heavily armored that much. The 300 Spartans Movie wouldn't be successful if they did not show that real spartans don't wear body armors. Their armors are pure abs and biceps. But on offensive, BluePhoenix also had too. Spartans should have bonuses on cavalries and elephants. Spartans aren't trained just to use A large shield and a medium sword, they can also fight with dual swords, even A large shield with spear. That's why teh 300 Spartans able to hold thousand persians in a narrow, bottle neck Canyon. From slave soldiers, cavalry, and even the wave of elephants, they hold out. I just dun understand why the Spartan in AOS is nerfed against elephants. From that i resort to less hp pikemens, (good for 1-2 turns against elepants).

The dev has left the building. :P

But I will write probably what he is thinking. :) By not posting he is communicating that he has no strong feelings either for or against the suggestion (unless he is just extremely busy :) ). He is probably not inclined to make major changes in a unit, especially one that has been in the game for so long, unless it is a major balance issue and not just a theoretical issue.

Forgive my intrusion. Daniel, please correct me if I'm wrong. :)
Thanks!

Why not develop a double sword Spartan. Maybe a research upgrade in the barrack. Allowed to make two hits instead of 1.

I don't think they had 2 swords. We might make an hoplite with less armor a sword and a round shield

I think its high time to change its stats its pierce armour to 2 and its speed to 4 also its turn cost be reduced to 6/7 and also its bonus agaist some units

I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet. It is ridiculous that a meh unit like the spartan costs 8 turns, and the most complex siege weapon in the game, a trebuchet, costs 6 turns. I think either trebuchets/cannons/other complicated stuff should cost at least 2 turns more, or spartans should cost 2 turns less.

In other words, its pointless to make a spartan when you can make cannons and catapults and trebuchets for the same price or cheaper.

Yes, it is true. (I don't think much of infantry in general)

But it seems that the cannon has him outclassed almost all around. (but remember cannons require 12 turns of previous research)

I think the main reason that the Spartans need to be cheaper is because of the man-at-arms.

Well, yes, but cannons/siege weapons should still be a lot more expensive than infantry even with the cost of inventions.

Also, the way I see man-at-arms: All around best infantry for late game if you are willing to put in the research. They outclass spartans, legionairres, macemen, samurai, and basically all other infantry. However, those other infantry are more suited to early-mid game, or if you just don't research man-at-arms.

For instance, if I wanted a strong infantry force early game, I would use legionairres and a centurion. If I just needed a couple of powerful foot units to hold off the enemy somewhere early game, I would use samurai/macemen. Should the game progress about 20 turns, I would switch over to man-at-arms to serve these purposes.

Well man-at-arms cost the same in research but are much cheaper than cannons - there is almost no way to protect cannons from man-at-arms. You need a heavy cavalry force, or ornithopter fleet (provided the infantry has no archer support), or many, many, many fortifications with cannons and catapults hiding in them.

I expect you to use this knowledge against me in the future.

Using infantry is not in my style at the moment and I am not so good with it, but I recognize their use.

Meh, 1 cannon hit + 1 fortress hit and a man-at-arms is dead. So long as you have 2-3 fortresses with archers and cannons in them, men-at-arms should not be able to do any serious damage, unless they are supported by trebuchets to take down the towers.

lol you can build 3 Man-at-arms to one cannon. Not to mention the time it took to build the stupid towers.

So 2-3 fortresses and 4-6 cannons = nearly 30 Man-at-Arms :)

Anyways back to the point- spartans suck presently. They should have 6 turn cost, faster speed(+1)(they did not wear so much armour as is presently displayed) maybe the armours can be lowered by 1(i dont understand the point of having so much pierce armour- even at half of it the archer does the same damage to the legionary) and more attack power(+1 or 2) and bonus against canons, elephants and other units
what say?

I agree it needs bonuses against cannons. I don't know about 4 speed... Yes, they were light infantry, but they weren't as fastas a chariot :)

Lastly, I agree they probably will need to cost 6 turns to be useful, but I think lowering their cost one point at a time is a good idea, otherwise we might end up with another OP unit until the next update
