interesting ones, but again (same for the raptor rider) i dont know these as a regual, commonly used unit types in fantasy world.
naturally i might be undereducated.

i think we should put in all units that are common in the Tolkien and D&D, i must emphasise "common", so we should start with units that you are most likely stumbling into in D&D, and we later put in the rare ones
(exception if u design a campaign or a map where there is a special enemy - that is no problem to put in immediately, but they will not be producable ones in eg. a random map)

Well both dragon knights and gryphon knights are a cliche in fantasy worlds.
Think about the dragonlance setting (one of the classic setings used ofr d&d) and also in forgotten realms (the main setting of d&d) are seen pretty often.
Not to talk about the warcraft setting where humans use gripphins like horses and orcs train wyverns as their mounts.

There are plenty of settings where you can find these (lotr is a low magic setting and you can't usually walk around the middle earth searching mages cause wizards are demigods).

btw in d&d also basic classes like the paladin class, can have mounts like that. Paladins have ha feat that allows them to obtain special mounts, from particular horses to unicorns, gryphons and with some special feats you can also have dragons.
