Viking Housecarl IMPLEMENTED

A decent infantry with a lot of health. His attack varies depending on his health.

He can start with 5 base attack, and for every -2 health he has, he gains another attack. Like a last stand kind of thing.

So he can wade through a field of arrows, and when he reaches the front line, be like a 12 attack monster.

Here is a VERY rough draft (and my first custom tile, be nice  )

hi.
housecarls are not neceserily vikings. the English army contained a group of them (I read somewhere)
but they are more likely use a one handed axe and protext themselves woth shield in arm.

Housecarls originated in Scandanavia. However, yes England and much of Europe was heavily influenced by vikings in the viking age, so far south as Italy. And yeah, like I said, my first pixel art every, so its a really rough draft, but the CONCEPT of his special is really up for discussion.

I drew a pixellated troll once. Sounds okay until you realize that I was trying to make a different unit. :(

I want more nordic units

A housecarl was a non-servile manservant or household bodyguard in medieval Northern Europe. The institution originated amongst the Norsemen of Scandinavia, and was brought to Anglo-Saxon England by the Danish conquest in the 11th century. They were well-trained, and paid as full-time soldiers...
A very elite & unique unit for the nords that can only be trained at nordic hall.
Stats:
Trained at : Nordic hall
Cost : 4
Hp: 25
Atk: 13
Spd: 3
Armor: 2/4
Sight: 4
Heal bonus: 2.0
Spell resistance: 100%
Bonuses:
50% archers
50% light foot melee
50% medium foot melee
100% Siege machines
100% Buildings
150% Fortifications
550% Mega Buildings
Desc:
The name of this unit derives from an old Norse name for common household servants (house karl), but it later came to mean the elite household guards of a Viking lord. One Viking king in England required that a man have a gold inlaid two-handed sword to be considered for his Huskarls. These were the king’s best professional troops, carrying the best equipment he could afford. Their sole duties were training, guard duty, and war.

(This should be affected by blacksmith upgrades but only melee damage)

Almost everything is good, only bonuses needs to be toned down.
He is like foot knight, sacrificing some melee armor and hp for pierce and power (non-upgradable units should be compared to the average of whole line).
Regular heavy infantry bonuses are +50% vs archers, medium and light melee, +100% vs siege and buildings.
As nothing in the history or weaponry suggests specialisation vs heavy infantry - bonus has to be taken down. Bigger damage vs archers would one-shot even heaviest among them, so I would make it stay at 50%.
But quasi-medium melee increased bonuses vs structures and siege could be interesting - I would only decrease one vs megas to 550% or so to make it consistent.

Okay updated.

I also increased the p.armor by 1 because of the shield

With 5 it has +2 compared to foot knight. Not really balanced.
And shield is never enough to justify additional p.armor.
Most medium melee have shields and yet 0 pierce armor.
Shield is the reason they can have increased hp, as it's used both in melee and against ranged attacks.
Additionally I am planning adding few techs which will affect all shielded units (not straight p.armor bonus, but slightly related).

do you think this unit will be more underused or overused than viking berserk?
I use viking berserk a lot since he has a lot of uses and is quite powerful.
This seems like a dismounted knight tier 2
Maybe add a throw axe or a transformation ability to dual wield ?

Is the current suggested version of Huscarl armed with a sword or an axe? Presumably the curved blade of an axe would better penetrate plate armour than the straight edge of a sword. If so, this could be reason to add a slight bonus Vs heavy infantry to axe-wielders.

This is just a thought - I do not know the science behind it or whether my assumption is accurate... I would love to hear more from any of the scholars of medieval warfare amongst us :)

Quite the contrary. Sword was commonly used secondary weapon because of versality. It could be slashed against unarmored flesh, thursted on small openings or weakest parts of the armor or hacked on thinly protected places (while not really effective that way).
Axe is specialized in hacking. So it can be concluded, that it's only really more effective against wooden or leather armor.
But it's not so important. In the end - the weapon drawn on a unit is only artistic representation.
Huscarls represent elite guardians, not anti-armor specialists.

Yup, fair enough. This I fully understand and agree with - a hugely important point for how this game works... otherwise we'd all be wondering about these invisible horses that pull those wagons

Exactly. Differing sizes, lack of secondary weapons, lack of primary weapons (knights).
Game needs some simplifications.
