Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Beyond impressive with this one!!! The only minimal detail is to make himself a tad bit more thicker all round, but beyond that, it is awesome!

Thanks it's my first sprite ever made so that means alot.
You probably mean the body part yeah?
I'll fix him up
Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Hi,
well the concept is ok but there are plently of rookie mistakes.
Naming them:
-Outline not consistent.
-bad shading
-trying to put details that u simply cant with single pixels.
-broder of axe 'cut off' byond 32 px.

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
you are very gifted! grats!
Endru will check if it fits the other units.
also idea: what about animating it a little?
(i mean"idle" animation - eg, halberd mmoves a little right and left 1-1 pixels) and maybe the feather.

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Yeah totally i have made a animated one already but need to make it again because of the newer shaded version. One of the reason i came here was to maybe get people myself included to polish this game and make it more lively with small animation's. That will make the game much more interesting for people who are new and old.Stratego (dev) wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:39 pm you are very gifted! grats!

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
I have one suggestion - try to lengthten the pole a little (stick going few pixels beyond the leg, pointy end 1 or 2 pixels closer to the top frame) - it looks ok right now, but weapon can be mistaken with greataxe.

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
How about now? Ive lengthened the stick and thinned out the blade. Can't do anything more regarding length.
Also added a red cross in it's chest seemed too naked and the originals Sprite's had crosses on them too.
Edit: made some small changes on the unit

I ment to also make more visible halberd spike, even if , by just few pixels. I changed it myself ( he had also white pixels around halberd axe - try to erase removed parts to transparent backgroud). Here:

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Ehh. It looks somehow weird in miniature after all.
Ok changed the axe shape and placement a little to better fit.
Now it's great unit image, but too different from the other st john.
Attaching corrected + changed to st Jonh armor/colors

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Isn't the axe part so big while the spear point part is short? It looks like a battle axe man to me. I suggest making the axe part smaller and the spear part longer.
Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Looks very nice remade the axe head a bit smaller and spike a bit longer tried sizing it down a bit more, but it looks bad if it's smaller then it is now. Idk maybe there is some 8 bit colouring technique i dont know about.
But in my opinion it looks good.
@Endru1241 how can i test it out in miniature also, and what does that mean in game?

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Nah, by miniature, I ment put in forum or viewed in folder. I often forget to look at real size (I mainly view it, while editing in gimp).
To test it in game You'll have to have modding turned on.
Btw even before checking ingame I've noticed contrast between st.john units.
Now, they look similar:
Edit: in game I actually tested the one changed by You, just mixed files while posting

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
Changed the color of the boots to a more neutral color. because if the teamcolor would be lets say blue he would have a red and white tabard with green boots and blue gloves and feather that wouldn't look good.
Made the chain mail on his legs more chain mail like
Bit more reshading overal
I'll fix the other one's too

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
I actually prefer that shield because it is more comfortable to look at. The cross isn't spanning itself across the entire shield.
Don't forget that light is a part of shading, and it should regular from up to down.

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
So what do you guys think is it better now?
I have made him 2 bits higher because he looked like a dwarf.
Reshaped shield.
2 bits longer sword.
And all around shading.
The shield can use some shading work but i don't know how yet, this is the best i could.

Amazing belosteel!!!!!
Splendid progress in so little time, my last observations, both halberdiers look great but maybe their legs can get just a little thicker, and regarding the saint jhons units, maybe you can take a look at the historical figures.
My observations:
The swordman should at least in my opinion conserve the oval shield beacuse of historical reasons
The halberdier should change his appereance a little, regarding his helmet and pants.
The knight of Saint John, while looking good, can perhaps if theres a possibility change to look like the one of the following images

We can vote what shield we'll want, i personally think the one i drew looks better, also more details are possible on the shape i drew.
Draw one so we can compare maybe?
Also yes the helmet on the halberdier was a hat first but i can remake it into this one
https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... Lph07XM%3A
And i did not draw the Knight only did the halberdier and edited the soldier a bit

Re: Polishable unit images in AOS
You are indeed correct they did used that shield but only like 300 years earlier to the defenders of Malta that I tried to recreate. And yes ill give it a shot maybe I can make it.Belosteel wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2019 5:04 pmI did research and the saint John soldiers have the type of shield i drew.Gral.Sturnn wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2019 4:31 pm Amazing belosteel!!!!!

Not bad, but I suggest that the Crossbowmen actually HOLD the weapons. Instead of it being drawn in front of them.
Not only that, but the stalk looks bent, and not in the right way.
